Polygyros

Polygyros is the capital of the Prefecture of Halkidiki. The town is built in the shape of an amphitheatre on a plateau on the south west side of the mountain Holomontas. Polygyros is famous for its carnival celebrations, which attracts visitors from around Greece. A nearby location called "Panagia" ("Virgin Mary") is the setting of a famous religious celebration on August 15th.

The carnival festivities of Polygyros last for 12 days and mostly reflect local folklore.  They involve feasting to the accompaniment of traditional songs and dances.  Moreover, they offer attendants the chance to drink much wine and eat various other local products,  such as village sausages, pies and halvah.
