Polygyros the capital of the Prefecture of Halkidiki with approx. 5,000 inhabitants. Polygyros is the largest community in Halkidiki, but the municipality is not the largest. The town is located in the middle of Halkidiki peninsula, on a plateau on the south west side of the mountain Holomontas at the foothill of mount at an altitude of 560 m. Polygyros is famous for its carnival celebrations, which attracts visitors from around Greece. In the northern part of the mountain there is a verdurous slope that climbs up to the peak "Tsoukalas" (890m.) from where one can outface a panoramic and charming sight: the three peninsulas of Sithonia, Kassandra and Agio Oros with the magnificent Mount Athos and the picturesque islands Diaporos, Ammouliani and Kelyfos.
The Archaeological Museum of Polygyros includes representative archaeological finds from Halkidiki, which present the significant cultural history from the prehistoric times. Displayed in the Museum vestibule are a number of inscribed monuments and reliefs from the Classical and Hellenistic periods, some of the epigraphic testimonia come from marble and poros gravestones, while others are contracts for the sales of houses or vineyards, inscribed on stone.
