HELP THE ANIMALS OF HALKIDIKI

“We are the animals of Halkidiki.

You see us in the streets, you feed us with treats.

We lay in the sun for the summer is fun, but the summer doesn't last forever.

When the winter comes and you go home we're still on the streets but with no treats and we have no home to go.

Some of us get by, but a lot of us will die by the poison or the wheels of a car.

It's not our fault, we didn't ask to be here but we are and we need your help,

Just a few Euros is all it will take to see us through another year,

Some of our friends have even found homes where they're loved and cared for once more.”

It’s a known fact that there are thousands of  stray animals in Greece. We see them every day while we are enjoying our holidays. But do you ever stop to think why? Why are there so many?

I’m not going to go into the graphic details but as you read on you’ll come to understand some of the reasons. Over breeding, lack of sterilisation programs, abandonment and lack of care are just some.

Every year hundreds of dogs, cats, puppies and kittens needlessly suffer. There are laws in Greece against cruelty to animals, but are seldom if at all upheld. One of the biggest problems is over breeding and a lack of a national sterilisation program.

But, there is help!

For the last 10 years, Julie at Halkidiki Animal Rescue has worked tirelessly and against the odds to help the stray and injured animals in Halkidiki. In the last year alone, with the help of local vets has managed to sterilise over 260 animals, re-home numerous cats and dogs and has nursed countless other back to full health.

Most of the animals she has re-homed are now living full and happy lives in the UK, Germany, Denmark, Belgium and Greece, but all this comes at a price.
